Hello, how are you?
It’s interview number TEN of ‘With What Do I dOOdle?’ and today we have the totally FAB Lucie Sheridan, aka ‘RUBBISH Portraits’.
I love using all sorts of things to draw with and I’m always up for a favourite tools chat, SO I’ve been asking some fellow creatives what they like to use.
Lucie Sheridan is completely fab. From the moment I saw her pOp-uP ‘RUBBISH Portrait’ booth I realised she is a genius. She’s carved out a career doing what she loves in the most brilliant, cool and quirky fashion. She’s an inspiration.
Lucie graduated from Bristol UWE, achieving a first-class degree in 2003. With a lifelong passion for drawing, her artistic talents have propelled her through a successful career as a commercial illustrator for over 20 years. Lucie’s portfolio boasts collaborations with prestigious publications such as magazines, newspapers, and design agencies, as well as the creation of unique limited-edition screen prints.
In March 2019, Lucie unveiled her brainchild, “Rubbish Portraits”, a Live Portrait Booth. A revolutionary concept that has since captivated audiences worldwide. As the driving force behind this innovative venture, Lucie and her portable booth have embarked on countless journeys, bringing art to life at weddings and events across diverse locations. Within the confines of the pop-up booth, guests are treated to a three-minute immersive experience, receiving personalised A4 portraits—a cherished memento of their special occasions. Notably, Lucie insists on a unique rule: no smiling, as simply..she cannot draw teeth.
In addition to her artistic skills, Lucie possesses exceptional communication skills—a trait she attributes to her dyslexic mind and affinity for engaging with others. Whether engaging in conversation or capturing likeness through her drawings, Lucie effortlessly combines her talents to create memorable experiences for all involved.
Here’s Lucie’s…
What’s your favourite thing to draw?
I draw faces, loads of them, in just 3 minutes or under, and I can draw up to 65 heads in just 4 hours!
Where is your favourite place to draw?
In the comfort of my custom pop-up booth!
What’s your favourite thing to draw on?
Thick, smooth paper.
What’s your top favourite tool to draw with?
I use black Indian ink and small, medium, and large acrylic paintbrushes.
When I am not drawing portraits, I love to use an old pot of ink, which, when wet, becomes fluid; it’s brown. I acquired it from an old art college that was closing down. I could not tell you what make or where it’s from, but it’s my pride possession, and I hope it never runs out 😂
Do you have a favourite COMBO of tools you use?
Again, when I’m not drawing portraits, I love old, scratchy, dried-up paint brushes, coloured brush pens and a black fine liner.
Is there a tool you always avoid?
An HB pencil
Is there a drawing tool you’d LOVE to try?
I’m not sure there is.
And finally
What’s your TOP favourite drawing snack?
White wine 😂 I’m afraid of crumbs
Thanks so much Lucie. Keep your eyes peeled for a portrait bOOth near you!
